The customer had developed over years an extremely comprehensive MES, which is largely
regarded as one of the industry’s best systems in its business area. However, the
entire system was built on an AS400 (IBM) platform using RPG (migrated from IBM
series I) and this was proving to be a major scale barrier to cost effectively cross
implement the same system at other plants that needed to upgrade their manual /
semi automated shop floor management systems.
Therefore, a completely new MES needed to be designed ground up, using scalable
technology providing low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), while retaining in full
all the functional scope of the home grown best-of-class solution.
